What is a concrete noun?

Examples: almirah, car, Delhi, boat, table, chair, etc.

An abstract noun is a word that represents ideas, emotions, or qualities that cannot be experienced through our senses.

Examples: happiness, sadness, achievement, eagerness, etc.

  1. -ment, -ion, -ness, -ity are some of the most common suffixes used in the formation of abstract nouns. Examples: achievement, encouragement, combination, attraction, bitterness, aggressiveness, curiosity, productivity, etc.
  2. -ship, -hood, -dom, -th are the least common ones. Examples: ownership, partnership, childhood, brotherhood, freedom, wisdom, length, strength, etc.
  3. Some abstract nouns don’t even use any suffix at all. Examples: anger, hate, love, fear, courage, beauty, trust, patience, etc.
